Although we all know that the country has approximately 100 million people, the strip of land stretchs along the S-shaped with the desire to become an industrial country, the formation of an industry building cars is a must. But why we still could not figure out some realistic solutions?
Apparently, the Vietnam's automobile industry in this time can not be formed only with the will of managers, it must come from the ambitious entrepreneurs dare to enter the automobile manufacturing industry. Let's talk based on the entrepreneurs' basic mindsets to solve the problem of Vietnam's automobile industry.
Firstly, in terms of the market, there are about 1.7 million cars currently running here and there around the country. Each year the number of cars can increase in use, until 2020, approximately 14%. The proportion between cars and other vehicles will be 60% (currently about 47%). That is, the auto market need to add more than 200 thousands per year for all vehicle categories. However, the most production vehicles also could not exceed 6000 units in a year. With such a market, the investment is hardly profitable. Despite the fact that our entrepreneurs had good faith for the automobile industry, but they would be looking into the big profitable areas: land, resources, forest recovery, trade... So, who would desire when they themselves have yet to find workable solutions?
The automobile manufacturing industry includes both assembly and parts manufacturing industry (or the auxiliary automotive industry). Nearly 20 years in the motor vehicle assembly industry, the companies have made a lot of basic moves, until now, the assembly capacity of trucks and buses were able to meet the large domestic demand by 2020. On the other hand, the 9 seat vehicles and less are still must be invested er, because it fell into the "difficult area" of the global automotive industry.
It's called "difficult area" because it required a very high technology, having fierce international competitiveness, but there is a huge market, especially with developing countries such as Vietnam. Therefore, the multi-national corporations consider that is a need-to-be-exploited market. Nevertheless, the groups only want to transfer their assembly technology and copyright in Vietnam under the package deal, the development of supporting industries towards localization is not suitable for their global strategy. In other words, they actually created a playing field which is not easy to share. In short, the problem of the auxiliary industry in developing countries such as Vietnam shall not be solved before long.
Secondly, most small and medium enterprises in many years have received assembly technology transfers to help them created the basis of mutual relationship and learn somewhat about technology and experiences from their partners and gradually integrate into global, but all these advantages were not enough to help them step into this industry. In fact, this industry at this time includes two basic elements: traditional manufacturing technology and mechatronics technology (high tech).
In the traditional manufacturing technology, which requires large initial capital investment while capital recovery is slow, Vietnam enterprises get very little market share and they can not go ahead with outdated equipment. In high technology, although we have the advantage of capital investment, but not enough scientific qualifications and experiences to go on. As a result, the movement in any direction on supporting industries at this time will also need a specific time to accumulate capital and knowledge. How long is time? It depends on the macro-policies. Therefore, once again, the problem of the auxiliary industry also shall not be solved before long.
In the long term, the automotive industry in Vietnam also needs to thrive as a desire to become an industrial nation. In reality, we must give a top priority of macro-economic stability. If the industry scenario in the present moment brighter, the unreality of policy planning will happen inevitably. If that scenario is not good enough, certainly can not squeeze into the automobile industry. The automotive manufacturing industry is different from other industries because it shall be only grow when macro-economy has gained stability. Overall picture of the automobile industry of Vietnam maintains many dark patches. These dark patches should look in all directions, it shows the need for improving macroeconomic before we start entering automobile industry, and that's why the solution shall not come soon.
The transformation from an agricultural country into an industrial country is our expectation. We need to try every way. There are many comments on the development of the automotive industry. The criticism at various levels and from many different cognitions, but still achieve the same general idea that be aspiration for automotive industry. We will do it yet different far from not to do.
